“𝗦𝗮𝗮𝗯, 𝗺𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻. 𝗔𝗮𝗽 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗸𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗼.”

(𝗦𝗶𝗿, 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗼 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀.)

These words weren’t spoken in a corporate boardroom. They were whispered on a pitch-black night in an active, deadly minefield in Jammu & Kashmir.

I recently watched a powerful podcast, featuring Lieutenant General Sanjiv Rai (Retd.) — former GOC of the Chetak Corps.

He shared a chilling, true story from his days as a Major serving with the legendary 𝗦𝗶𝗸𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆.

While climbing a mountain in an operational area, his Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) suddenly halted the team.

The JCO said, Saab we are in a mine field area. One wrong step meant instant death.

Without a moment's hesitation, the JCO stepped in front of his officers. He said, "Saab aap mere footsteps ko follow Karo or peeche peeche aa jao."

Clearing the path step by step so his officers could walk safely behind him.

When they successfully crossed the zone, a shaken Major Rai asked him: "How did you know exactly where the mines were?"

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗖𝗢’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀:

“Saab, I didn't know where the mines were. But I only have one year left in my service, and my children are well-settled. If I step on a mine, my family will be taken care of. But you have full life ahead of you. The unit needs your leadership. If I died, at least my CO and my Officer would be safe.”

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

In the corporate world, we use terms like "Psychological Safety" and "High-Trust Teams."

But the Indian Armed Forces live it at a level that defies basic human survival instincts.

--------------------------------------------------------------

What can leaders learn from this level of deep-rooted commitment?

🔹 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: Loyalty isn't demanded; it is earned through a leader's character and empathy.

🔹 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗴𝗼: High-performing teams share a purpose so deep that individual credit vanishes.

▶️ The Real Question -

❓ Are we building workplaces where people just occupy roles, or are we forging CULTURES where people genuinely build Trust and Perform?
