Are you NERVOUS Or EXCITED?
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱-𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 - 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
Your heart is pounding, your hands are clammy, and your mind is racing.
You probably think you are just incredibly nervous.
But what if -- you tell yourself you are Excited?
Yes, Your Brain is Lying to You.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 - Leadership expert Simon Sinek noticed a fascinating trend while watching the Olympic Games. When journalists asked elite athletes if they were nervous before a race, their answer was always identical:
"𝗡𝗼, 𝗜’𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱."
Elite performers also possess nerves. They just use a different label.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲
As Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer explains, our emotions often share the same biological signals. Both states cause a pounding heart, clammy hands, and hyper-focus on the future.
What changes is the label we give them.
"𝗡𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀" 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂.
"𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱" 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂.
Trying to "calm down" forces your brain to fight your body's adrenaline. It doesn't work.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - The next time you step into the boardroom or sit down for a critical exam, do not suppress the surge. Lean into it.Take a breath and say three words out loud:
"𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱."
Stop trying to kill your nerves. Your body isn't panicking — it is just powering up.
❓ Have you ever tried reframing your nerves as excitement?
