Why our Classrooms still building Answering Machines and not Thinkers

For weeks, I’ve been reading posts on our schools and about the importance of fostering CURIOSITY in children. The most significant trait for a kid for learning.

I was speaking with my neighbour’s kids and a few students in our society. I asked them how often they have classroom discussions around questions and concepts. Some of them were silent and some said — “Not much" It was shocking.

Despite all the buzzwords, seminars, the teaching is still one-way.

▶️𝗜𝗤 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: For years, Students are conditioned to follow -- "F-R-W" -- FIND - REMEMBER -- WRITE - the "right" Answer rather than ask the "right" Question. A highly sharpened IQ is like a KNIFE if not handled properly.

▶️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗤 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁: We are graduating students who can solve complex equations but lack the Emotional Intelligence (#EQ) to navigate human relationships or mental health.

▶️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽: 𝗪𝗲 can’t blame teachers alone. Carrying the load of 40+ students per class and a rigid timeline to "finish the syllabus," teachers are forced to prioritize speed over depth.

▶️𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵: Science is meant to be felt and seen. Yet, practical lab time is being squeezed out by theoretical lessons because theory is easier to test and faster to "deliver."

▶️𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗧𝗦 - How many students can follow their actual talent, be it in Creative or Performing Art, Music, Culture. Frustration develops when kids supress their inner voice.

▶️𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴" 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀: We have allowed a massive coaching center industry to become a shadow education system. Students are living double lives—school by day, coaching by night—leaving zero room for self-reflection or actual learning.

▶️𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. Instead of identifying a child’s unique aptitude, we thrust them into the endless race for IITs or NEET. We are wasting crores of rupees and years of youth on a "prestige race" that many children aren't even wired for.

▶️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺: Many school chains are now run by "CEOs" as business centers rather than centers of learning. Where the bottom line is profit.

The Bottom Line:

We are busy polishing the glass, but we are forgetting to let the light in. We need to stop the "factory model" and start looking at the human being sitting in the classroom.
